英語での時間の言い方

 

先日オンライン英会話で時刻の表現の練習をしました。意外と知っているようで知らなかったので、復習の意味も込めてまとめてみました。

英語で時間を言う時には大きく分けて２通りの言い方があります。

• Military way (24 hours)＝軍事時間（24時制）
• Standard way (12 hours)＝標準時刻（12時制）

Military way　24時制

Military wayとは時間を24時制で表すことです。日本でも鉄道や病院など業種によっては24時制の使用が必須のところがありますね。

英語で24時制で表現する場合は以下のようになります。

14:00 = 14 hundred hours

16:30 = Sixteen thirty

日本語と同様、24時制の場合は午後か午前か言わなくても明らかなので、afternoonなどはつきません。

Standard way　12時制

12時制の場合、様々な言い方があります。12時制の場合にはamやpm、morningやafternoonなどをつけて、午前か午後がわかるようにする必要があります。

午前6時の場合

1. 6 o ‘clock in the morning
2. 6 am

12:00amの場合

1. twelve midnight
2. twelve o’clock midnight

ちょうどの時間は簡単です。では、分がある時はどうなるでしょう。

5:30 pm

1. five thirty pm
2. five thirty in the afternoon
3. half past 5 in the afternoon
4. half before 6 pm
5. thirty minutes before 6 pm
6. thirty minutes after 5 pm
7. thirty minutes to 6 pm

before、to、past、after、の言い方があります。

beforeの場合

●時○分＝○分前●＋１時＝○minutes before ●＋１となります。

10時15分＝45分前10時＋１＝forty five minutes before  eleven pm　です。

toの場合

●時○分＝○分前●＋１時＝○minutes to ●＋１となります。

10時15分＝45分前10時＋１＝forty five minutes to  eleven pm　です。

beforeとtoは同じ形式です。

afterの場合

●時○分＝○分後●時＝○minutes after ●となります。

2時45分＝45分後2時＝forty five minutes after  two am　です。

pastの場合

●時○分＝○分過ぎ●時＝○minutes past●となります。

3時21分＝21分過ぎ3時＝twenty-one minutes past three am　です。

afterとpastは同じ形式です。

am、pmの位置

日本では時刻の前にam、pmをつけている人、お店等をよく見かけます。

AM10:00 open　、　PM2:00　ミーティング　など。間違いです。

10:00 am　と後ろにつけるのが正解です。

15分と30分と45分の表現方法

15分＝a quarter　と表現しますので、10時15分は a quarter past  ten　もしくは　a quarter after ten　です。

30分＝half　と表現しますので、3時30分は half past three　です。

では、2時45分はどうしたら良いでしょう。2時45分は3時15分前ですので、a quarter before three もしくは a quarter to three となります。

まとめ

時間の表現の仕方は日本語同様、様々な言い方があります。ルールを覚えると簡単なのでしょうが、Military way が一番楽だなぁと思いました。
